Ipswich building reputation as top day trip destination forBrisbane visitors as Nature Centre has record visitors

Floating Images

Hot air ballooning with Floating Images in
IpswichSource: Quest Newspapers

Ipswich
is building its credentials as a top day trip
destination as a way to lure the lucrative
Brisbane
market.

The Ipswich Nature Centre in
Queens Park
had a record number of visitors last year, with
more than 210,000 people passing through the gates to see
wildlife from bilbies to goannas.

Floating Images owner Graeme Day said his hot air balloon business,
which recently celebrated 10 years flying over Ipswich scenery,
also appealed to the day trip market.

“If people are looking for something to do, it’s easy to get out to
Ipswich. We’re only 30 minutes from Brisbane CBD, at the hour of
morning we meet, and they can go for a fantastic balloon ride over
beautiful scenery,” he said.

The two balloons have taken about 8000 people over the Ipswich,
Scenic Rim and Somerset region, and Mr Day said the company had a
reasonable number of bookings for Christmas and New Year.

But Mr Day said Ipswich still had to work on promoting tourism to
counter the “stigma” still held by many domestic visitors.

Council tourism committee chairman David Pahlke said Ipswich was
Queensland’s oldest provincial city and was a blend of heritage
charm, metropolitan sophistication and expansive green spaces.

“Just 40 minutes west of Brisbane, Ipswich combines rich heritage
with the energy of being the hub of today’s growth region in South
East Queensland,” he said.

Cr Pahlke said residents, as well as visitors, could be surprised
to discover the range of attractions available in Ipswich.

He said some of the drawcards included the V8 race experience,
helicopter wine tours, steam train rides, bushwalking as well as
the Australian Motorcycle Museum, the award-winning Workshops Rail
Museum, Ipswich Art Gallery and
Woodlands
of Marburg.

Council launched a tourism website, www.discoveripswich.com.au,
to act as a 24-hour information and itinerary planning service,
including bookings for tours, attractions and accommodation.

Completion of a key stage in the Bicentennial Bikeway projectallows uninterrupted travel between Toowong and the CBD

Bicentennial Bikeway

Bicentennial Bikeway project, under the Merivale St Railway
Bridge at MiltonSource: Quest Newspapers

Pedestrians and cyclists can experience uninterrupted
travel between
Toowong
and the CBD after another key stage in
Brisbane City
Council’s Bicentennial Bikeway project was
finally finished.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the $ 8.3 million Hale Street east
project improves commuter safety while making cycling and walking a
more accessible and enjoyable experience.

“By widening the bikeway and separating out cyclist and pedestrian
pathways, this upgrade enables more people to enjoy the popular
route and also ensures a safer and more efficient pathway for both
casual users and commuters,” Cr Quirk said.

Member for Mount Coot-tha Andrew Fraser said the completed project
added more than half a kilometre of dedicated pedestrian and cycle
paths between Hale St and the William Jolly Bridge.

Mr Fraser said the Bicentennial Bikeway was one of the most highly
used pedestrian and cyclist routes in southeast Queensland.

“Since 2006 the State Labor Government has spent more than $ 14
million upgrading the bikeway to a higher quality and safer
standard,” Mr Fraser said.

The bikeway project involved a major upgrade of the bikeway between
the Merivale Street Railway and William Jolly Bridges to provide
separate pedestrian and cycle paths.

Tennis still strong despite forced closures

Tennis Balls

Over the past decade 170 tennis courts have been forced to
close across BrisbaneSource: Quest
Newspapers

Over the past decade 170 tennis courts have been forced
to close across
Brisbane
but, despite that fact, former tennis champion
Ashley Cooper believes the sport will remain strong

Cooper, the 1958 Wimbledon champion, said plans for a new tennis
centre at
Milton
were proof.

His comments follow fears that more private centres will be forced
to close under pressure from developers and rising rates.

Cooper led discussions between Tennis Queensland and state and
local governments in 2005 to improve tennis facilities across the
state, which resulted in new centres at
Tennyson
,
Wooloowin
and Griffith University at
Mt Gravatt
.

He said said seeing the careers of Bernard Tomic and Ashleigh Barty
borne out of the new quality facilities showed tennis was in “a
hell of a lot better shape.”

Tennis Queensland CEO Ken Laffey said around 350 courts had been
lost around the state in the past 15 years. At least 170 of those
have been around Brisbane in the past decade, while 53 courts have
been added in that time.

Also, the Milton centre will include 6 new courts.

But Tennis Brisbane president Rod Woods said private centres were
under pressure from developers and faced increased rates every
year.

Woods, who last month was forced out of his land on
Albany Creek
Rd on which the centre stood, said it was “only
a matter of time” before private centres faced more hardship.

Tennis Queensland facilities development manager Michael Blomer
said there was “not much we can do” as developer pressure due to
increasing land values, as well as high overheads, hurt centres
under threat.

“In a 5-15km radius from the city, those centres are starting to
become more valuable,” he said.

He supported moves from
Brisbane City
Council and the State Government had held to
ensure more publicly-owned centres.

“They’re much less likely to be sold and it costs them zero (to buy
the land),” Blumer said.

Council recently provided $ 300,000 of funding for private and state
schools to build courts for school and community use.

Woods and fellow Tennis Brisbane member Wayne Brumm, who owns

Ferny Hills
Tennis Centre, said it could be more effective to
take over and upgrade existing centres rather than build new
ones.

“I would question local and state governments why they couldn’t
take matters into their own hands and approach existing tennis
centres and secure them for community use,” Brumm said.

He said he had no interest in selling his centre, but called on
local and state government to secure other private centres for
community use before developers did.

Brisbane City Council Lifestyle Committee chairwoman Cr Geraldine
Knapp said council would consider buying privately-owned centres
for future community use but it would need to be in the best
interests of ratepayers.

Moreton Bay
Regional Council sport and recreation spokesman
Gary Parsons said Woods was the first tennis centre takeover the
council was aware of since amalgamation, but it hadn’t been
identified as a major issue.
